In the author's words . . .

This is my first Cozy! It was so light and funny to write. The constant bickering and back and forth between the characters kept me entertained the whole time!

And just like that, she was saved. Addie leapt up, unlocked the door, and launched herself at him. She felt his arms go around her even as he stumbled backwards. “I’ve got you,” he mumbled near her ear. The girls danced around them both, sniffing at the stranger’s pantlegs, somehow knowing he was a good guy. And then she remembered she was wearing a towel. And nothing else.

Chapter Six

For the length of a heartbeat, it didn’t matter. She drew in strength from his arms surrounding her. His warm breath ruffling her damp hair. Then she stepped back, pulling the towel firmly around her.

“Oh, um, I’m sorry.” Gracey took that moment to play a game and tugged on the edge of her towel. It slid a little lower. “Gracey, no. Bad girl.” The crestfallen dog released the material, ears flattened against her head, eyes downcast. She reached down with the hand not gripping the towel to pet her head. “Sorry, girl. I’m a bit rattled.”

That’s when she noticed the body lying near the doorway. And felt the floor start to tilt.

“No, you don’t. I’ve got you.” He reached out, grabbing both of her upper arms. “Stay with me.” He shook her slightly. Just enough to grab her attention.

“I’m f-f-fine. Really. You’d think I’d be used to this by now.” She kept her gaze straight ahead to avoid seeing the body again.

“Ms. Foster, I have to get you out of here. This is a crime scene.”

She shook her head and laughed. A loud, high-pitched, bordering on hysteria laugh. A laugh that wasn’t going to end. “My bedroom is a crime scene.” She clamped her lips together and closed her eyes. “I laugh when I’m nervous.”

And then he did the most unexpected thing. He chuckled. A deep, hearty chuckle that vibrated up from his chest.

Her eyes sprang open, and she stared right into his dark ones. “Oh.”

“After everything you’ve just been through, no one can blame you for laughing. Or screaming. Or even throwing something. But I’d prefer you not cry. Anything but that.”
